Flautata Doce was written in 2013 at the request of two recorder players from Porto Alegre (Brazil): Lucia Becker Carpena and Eliana Vaz Huber. Lucia is my colleague at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), where she coordinates the recorder ensemble Flautarium (which premiered the piece in August of 2013). Eliana is in charge of the recorder ensemble of the Preludio project at the Instituto Federal do Rio Grande do Sul.
The name of the work is a pun on the Portuguese term for recorder: flauta doce (sweet flute). I made up the word flautata, thinking of it as a toccata for flutes. It is dedicated to the “sweet flute players of my hometown”, the word sweet applying here not only to the instrument, but to the players as well.
In 2014, Leonardo Winter, Professor of flute at UFRGS, after attending a performance of Flautarium, asked me to adapt Flautata Doce for flute quartet. The new version, for two flutes in C, alto and bass flute, was premiered simultaneously in November 2015 by Leonardo at the VI Rio Grande do Sul Flute Encounter, in Pelotas (Brazil), and by Christine Beard and the University of Nebraska (UNO) flute ensemble at the Nebraska Music Educators Association Convention, in Lincoln (USA).
Both versions — for flutes and for recorders — are included in the present edition.

A Bachelor of Music from the Uruguayan University in Montevideo, Daniel Wolff was awarded full scholarships from the Brazilian government to obtain the Master and Doctor of Music degrees from New York’s prestigious Manhattan School of Music, where he was given the Helen Cohn Award for outstanding achievement. He became thus the first Brazilian to ever receive a doctorate in guitar performance.
A Professor of Music at the Brazilian Federal University (UFRGS), and former Guest Professor at Berlin’s Universität der Künste, he is in constant demand to teach in universities and music festivals worldwide. He has also published articles in books and periodicals from Brazil, Uruguay, Germany, England and the United States.
Winner of guitar competitions in Brazil and the United States, he has performed widely in Europe, and South and North America, where he appeared at New York’s Carnegie Recital Hall.
As an arranger and composer, he had his works performed and recorded by orchestras and chamber ensembles in Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Italy, Germany, England, Canada and the United States. His arrangements have been recorded by a variety of artists, culminating in a Grammy Award and various Açorianos Prizes. He has also written prize-winning scores for film and ballet.
He has released several CDs in Brazil, Germany and Uruguay, featuring solo and chamber music, as well as concerti with orchestra. These have received a number of prizes in Brazil and warm reviews worldwide.
