The Erik Bosgraaf Edition
aims to bring playable high quality works to wider audience by presenting it in print for enthusiastic performers of the recorder worldwide.
Performance notes:
– Play without vibrato, also the sung notes.
– Try to sing all intervals ‚pure‘ especially the unisons, major thirds, fourths and fifths as to produce difference tones
– veloce, approximately two notes in half a second – tempo primo, approximately two notes in a second
The piece may be performed on any recorder ranging from voice flute to alto recorder depending on the singing range of the player. However, all singing must be performed on pitch (not a different octave as written).
The piece is based on the phenomenon of „clair-obscur“, a term derived from painting; Rembrandts‘ painting „The conspiracy of Claudius Civilis“ was the source of inspiration for this composition. The sung notes and alternative fingerings represent the effect of „obscur“, like a shadow of the concrete played notes which represent the „clair“.
